I have a mealy amazon parrot and he is about 9 months old and is going through his first moult. the poor bird is getting frustrated with the pin feathers around his head and neck. i shower him to help but i was wandering if there was anything else i could do to help him…plus how long should a moult last for? thanks x

Parrots normally preen each other around the head and neck to help the pin feathers emerge. Gently scratching him in the same direction as the feathers or gently pinching off the sheaths will help him and simulate what his flock members would do. I have read that the head feathers are the last to emerge in a molt so he should be near the end now.

Best to let it happen on its own…My birds have been molting for months…
try and help him by rubbing out the coating on the new feathers. this only really works on longer feathers, because sometimes it pinches if the feather is too short and the bird will get upset.
but the shower is a good idea. this is natural, so I know it will be hard to watch, but you are doing all you can, and have to let nature take its course
