Is an Amazon Parrot right for me?

Category: QA

Question by Heart 4 Birds: Is an Amazon Parrot right for me?
I have a Goffin’s Cockatoo and a Green Cheek Conure, they are wonderful and we love them dearly. We recently found an Amazon who needs a new home and they are willing to give him to us with cage and everything. We went to see him last night and he is very sweet, scared of strangers at first. But after an hour or so of just talking to him and being around him, he was content on our hands. He flew off once and landed hard on the floor, breaking a tail feather. My husband picked him back up and held him on his hand while I snipped off the broken piece. I thought it was very trusting for a bird who barely knew us! There were a couple of occasions when he could have really bitten us and probably been justified in his mind, but he didn’t. They think he is 3-4 years old, and from looking at pictures he may be a Double Yellow Head. He has a yellow forehead with some yellow on the back of his neck, red coloring on his shoulders and some color on his tail. I don’t know very much about amazons.

I think you have enough experience with birds to be able to deal with him, assuming he can get along with the other birds. He could easily kill the green cheek before you could intervene.
Never let the Amazon perch on your shoulder (in fact you really shouldn’t let any bird bigger than the green cheek). As a group they have a reputation in middle age for unexpectedly attacking and they could do tremendous damage to a face

if you have the resources to provide this bird a good home you should go for it. It sounds like you really like this bird. Search the internet or buy a book on Amazons and that should prepare you as you already have bird experience so you already know the fundamentals

I have a double yellow naped amazon, she is amazing. They are very smart, love interacting with people.All-though they seem to like women best.Mine sings opera, talks alto and teases the dogs, she barks and when the dogs run to the cage she cries OH help help help to get dogs in trouble. You wont be sorry if you take this bird, just be prepared for it to outlive you.Mine loves to snuggle into my neck and say awwww poor baby bird, they like attention but not as much as some i know, keep it in a room where you usually are………………..have fun and love your bird!
