Orange Wing Amazon Parrot Flew Away. What to do?

Question by yon2k7: Orange Wing Amazon Parrot Flew Away. What to do?
Hi there
Well I live in the UK and last night my Orange Wing Amazon parrot flew away out of our conservatory door. The weather was rather bad last night with quite heavy rain and today its still raining. He can’t really fly that far because whenever he flew from room to room he would usually be panting afterwards. He is not used to the outside world because he is hand-reared so trees and other birds are ‘alien’ to him and wouldn’t know what they are. We have searched the local estate and parks and put up advertisements and posters in the local paper shops and down in the town. He will be very frightened outdoors because he is not used to anything around him. He also doesn’t have the best sense of direction because he would always be flying in and out of different rooms trying to find my dad who he would always go to. Our family aren’t really that confident that we will see him again though. Is there anything else we can do to help find him if possible?
Thanks for your help and time.

It’s good that you posted ads out already. You should keep searching and maybe contact local animal shelters. When people see a parrot wandering around, I’m sure they’d contact those animal groups (we have spca..not sure about UK).

Put the cage outside with food & water. I have heard birds coming back to it. But, if you do catch him…clip the wings, it is unhealthy to have it flying from room to room…mine used to love to fly into the kitchen, because she saw me cooking! Now, she has to stay on her cage.

You have done everything you possibly could have done. Another thing you can do is put his favorite foods outside and monitor the area for him. Unlike dogs and cats, a pet bird that has no experience in the wild and is capable of flying, is very hard to capture. If it is raining and it is cold outside, a parrot may not survive, and once they lose their direction, they won’t know the way back home. I’m sorry. Once my parakeet flew away and it was sunny. I posted on a website that she is missing and I put another parakeet outside in a cage to mayb get the missing parakeet’s attention. The parakeet never came back…

So just continue on with your life, buy another parrot if it will make you feel better, and if your missing parrot is found, it would be a miracle and a very happy and pleasant surprise on your part.

I’m sorry, but there is nothing much you can do, I’ve said the only things that can be said in this situation and I hope they are somewhat helpful to you.

    Just don’t lose hope…Good Luck…

Call the radio station and ask them to say something on air about him. We had that happen here (in the states) and the bird was found and returned to the owner! :)

Good luck! I am praying for you! :)
