A macaw would be a better pet. This question is really all about preference. Macaw’s usually have a more extensive vocabulary, but like I said it’s personal preference. Macaw’s also usually cost more.

This depends on personal preference and what you are able to live with. Macaws are louder and have a larger and more destructive beak. Macaws are also larger and their cages and playstands will definitely take up more space in your home. Please keep in mind, though, that all parrots are noisy at times, are very messy, and need a lot of attention and mental stimulation from toys and interaction. Also, make sure you are really up for a long term committment as parrots live 50+ years and do not adjust well to being re-homed.

In my opinion an amazon is better in the sense that: they are smaller, require a little bit less attention and also take up less space. They’re not as loud as a macaw, but they still tear it up so to speak. My amazon talks quite a bit, so I think on tlaking that they are almost equal. Macaws are better in a sense they are not as likely to be one person birds and they do tend to have better talking skills. But also they’re beaks can be intimidating and they take up alot of space wiht their cage and playstands. They’re also more expensive and those beaks go through toys like you wouldn’t believe. So in my opinion an amazon but ti really depends on personal preference and what you can provide.

That is sort of like comparing apples and oranges. They are totally different! Both are great birds. Amazons and better talkers, but they are both awesome!

I like cockatoos. I have had an amazon parrot and a cockatoo yrs ago and they were both so friendly & loving but for me I rather get another cockatoo.

they would both be lovely pets …amazons and macaws are very noisey…so i hope u have nice neighbours …they both will need a good diet….plenty of toys ..stimulation and love …

It all depends on your preference. Are you more interested in a larger, more colorful bird; or one that may have a more extensive vocabulary?

Amazons are know to be awesome talkers. Macaws are able to learn to speak also but, in general, Amazons and African Greys are the real TALKERS, in my 20+ years experience and opinion.

I believe there are about 36 different species of Amazons and perhaps 20 different species of Macaws, depending on whether you include the Mini-Macaws and the hybrid birds (two naturally occuring species bred to make a “hybrid” macaw). For a list of macaws, check out the following website: http://www.avianweb.com/macawspecies.html. I’m sure they will also have a listing of all the Amazons as well.

Spend some time reading up on all of the various species’ temperments and pet quality before you choose any bird since they do tend to be long-lived pets – all having their good and bad points for cohabitating with humans.
